What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a skin disorder that causes redness. It typically affects the sensitive parts of the face (forehead, cheeks and nose). Sometimes it might spread to other body parts such as the scalp, ears, neck, chest and upper back.

Redness is the most pronounced symptom. In medicine, this condition is called erythema. Redness is present in all rosaceatic subtypes.
Who does Rosacea Affect?
Anybody can develop rosaceatic flares. It occurs in all races and ethnicities; however, people of Northwestern European descent are particularly affected. In the UK, 1 in 10 people is affected. According to the WHO (world health organization), in Nigeria, 1 in 400,000 people is affected. You can be affected at any age; however, it mostly affects people between the ages of 30 and 50. It peaks as people surpass their middle age years.
Men and women are affected; however, women are three times more likely to get affected than men. Even though, rosaceatic eruptions are more rampant in women, the severity is more intense in men.
What are the Symptoms of Rosacea?
Facial redness is the dominant symptom. It is present in all rosaceatic subtypes. There are four main rosaceatic subtypes: erythematotelangiectatic, papulopustular, phymatous and ocular. Other subtypes include: conglobata and fulminans. They are classified by their symptoms.Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea
Telangiectasias is the dominant symptom in this subtype. Telangiectasias is the expansion of blood vessels that are located near the surface of the skin. This might lead to the development of a web of spidery lines that run across the face.
It is very common in people with sensitive skin. Sometimes, it could lead to excessive dryness and the formation of scales.
Papulopustular Rosacea
The red bumps are the primary symptom of the papulopustular subtype. In medicine, these red bumps are called papules. They are often accompanied by pus-filled pustules.
People often confuse this subtype with acne; even though, acne outbreaks are typically teenage problems.
Phymatous Rosacea
The thickening of the skin is the principal symptom of the phymatous subtype. Often, the thickening of the skin is accompanied by the formation of irregular surface nodularities.
This subtype is often associated with the enlargement of the nose. In medical nomenclature, the enlargement of the nose is called rhinophyma. There is also the enlargement of the chin (gnathophyma), the enlargement of the forehead (metophyma), enlargement of the ears (otophyma) and the enlargement of the eyelids (blepharophyma).
Ocular Rosacea
The distinguishing symptom of the ocular subtype is the inflammation of the eyelids due to telangiectasias. The eyes become bloodshot and watery. Cysts and styes sometimes develop around the eyelids.
During an ocular flare, you are likely to experience a sensation of stinging and burning pain around the eyelids. Extreme cases can provoke a loss of vision.
There are four treatment techniques for this condition: trigger avoidance, medication, laser surgery and topical agents. The appropriate treatment technique depends on the severity and subtype.
Many people do not seek treatment for mild cases. They simply cover it with cosmetics. This is a rather dangerous thing to do because rosaceatic flares deteriorate and worsen over time. You should always get treatment, even for mild cases.
Trigger avoidance is a technique which should be applied alongside more potent treatments. By itself, trigger avoidance won’t work; unless, you are dealing with a very mild case.
Trigger avoidance is a behavior modification technique. It consists of changing your behavioural patterns in such a way as to avoid possible environmental factors that can provoke a rosaceatic eruption.
Here is a non-exhaustive list of the triggers that, you must avoid: excessive exposure to sunlight, emotional stress, hot weather, windy conditions, strenuous exercise, alcohol consumption, hot baths, humidity, spicy foods, certain skin care products, steroids, marinated meat, heated beverages, caffeine and histamine-rich foods.
